I don’t often recommend travel films, but this one had a real impact on me. I saw it in the theater last Summer. Cairo Time is the story of an American woman in Egypt who’s husband is diplomat. When he isn’t available to show her around she connects with his friend and mentee Tariq. As Tariq shows her the sights and sounds of his complex city, she becomes seduced both by Cairo and by him. It is a lovely, sad, touching film that is as much about Cairo as the love story. Seeing it through Tariq’s eyes you begin to understand how locals feel about their home. Given the unrest in Egypt right now, it may be your best bet for a visit. At least for now.
