Travel tip of the week

Did you know that many hotels put “blocks” on your credit card when you check in?  This happened to me this week.  I arrived at my hotel and they ran my credit card.  They didn’t charge it for anything, but they put a hold on my account for the amount of my room nights and a $50 per day charge for incidentals.  That means dry cleaning, meals in the restaurant, room service, valet parking just about any service the hotel offers.  Usually this isn’t a problem, but sometimes, as happened to me in Manhattan, you’ll go shopping and find your card declined.  When you check in to your hotel be sure to ask the clerk how you will be charged.  Are you prepaid?  Pay at check out?  And get the amount for any holds on your card.
