Want to travel more? Break up with your stuff

My husband forwarded me a post from Almost Fearless recently, and I thought it was really eloquently said.  We’ve spent the past couple of years slowly downsizing our lives so we could take a long trip to South America.  We stopped buying stuff we didn’t need (so hard!), and we’ve always sold and donated stuff (garage sales, Craigslist, Goodwill).  We figure it’s trickle down economics,  besides it puts good karma out in the world.  It is so freeing to let go of it all and just walk away.  I can’t think of anything I owned that was worth more than the experience of living as a native in another country.

I think this would be a great New Year’s resolution for 2010, break up with your stuff!

Exactly! My new mission is to live with only the things I would still want if I moved. Just think of your last moving day or packing session… how easy it was to part with things. I’m doing that all day every day. Whittling it down to only the best and brightest.

Own your things… but don’t let them own you!

Franki – “Own your things…but don’t let them own you” So true! It’s like distilling your life down to it’s essence to make room for more experiences.
