Wall-E
After two long years wait, I finally got to see Wall-E yesterday. Pixar's newest film is the story of a robot left alone on Earth to clean up the mess once humans abandon the planet. Pretty straight forward, until you realize that Wall-E has a personality. He watches movies (Hello Dolly), sings and dances to entertain himself, and even has trouble getting going in the morning. The sequence where he's "pre-coffee" as it were is really quite brilliant. Eventually a ship lands on Earth looking to recolonize the planet. Out pops a shiny white ovoid robot named, appropriately, Eve. She's exactly that, Eve to Wall-E's Adam. They make an unlikely pair, a May/December couple of the mechanized world. The rest of the movie unfolds as an action adventure. Eve gets taken back to space and Wall-E, loathe to part with her, goes along for the ride. Out there he finds that humans have become lazy, gelatinous blobs that spend their days online chatting or shopping for things they don't really need. A conspiracy plot ensues, robots are liberated and eventually Wall-E is wounded and needs Eve's help to survive. She moves heaven and Earth to save him and after some heart stopping bumps, they are reunited and happy at last.
The strange thing about the film is that it's so bittersweet. You ache for Wall-E to find a soul mate. When he does, things get in the way and frustrate what happiness they should have together. The humans in the film are a kind of disgusting premonition of what we could become if we don't push ourselves away from the table and abandon our hyper-consumerist culture. I won't sugar coat this, it's not a pretty picture. You'll walk away from the film contemplative. It makes you think. I thought it was going to be another Incredibles or Ratatouille where I couldn't wait to go back for a second helping, but I think with Wall-E I'm going to need a bit of time before I'm ready to see it again. To quote the little guy, "Whoa"

My tin boyfriend!
Wall-E is is movie theaters today! FINALLY! I've been waiting so long for this movie to come out. I'm heading to the Kabuki soon to get my first glimpse of what I'm sure will be a Pixar/Disney classic. BuzzSugar and most of the other movie critics have given it great reviews, so I have high hopes. Look for my review tomorrow!

Pomegranatini

Fashion Guy and I were experimenting in our cocktail test kitchen last night and came up with a delicious new libation, the Pomegrantini. Here's the recipe if you'd like to try it:
1-1/2 jiggers Odwalla pomegranate lemonade
2 oz Premium vodka (we used Imperial)
1/2 oz Tonic
Pour into a martini glass and drink.
If you'd like dress it up a bit, coat your glass with lemon cocktail sugar or spear a slice of pineapple on a drink umbrella and garnish. Cheers!

Flower Girl
Is this not the perfect dress to wear to a Summer wedding? I love the color, the line and just the overall freshness of the look. I'd need strappier black sandals or perhaps even a pair of fuschia slingbacks. But I could definitely see me sipping champagne in this fabulous Alice & Olivia dress!

I'm in love again
This little beauty showed up in my e-mail this morning from Saks Fifth Avenue. Not that I'm in the market for Fall clothes (yet!), but doesn't it look like the perfect dress to take me through Fall and Winter?

My new baby
Well I had a near miss last weekend with that Cole Haan tote that I've been lusting after. I went into our local Cole Haan store and met up with my favorite sales person, Jeannie. She didn't have my bag, but located one in Portland, OR which she arranged to have shipped free of charge (love Jeannie!). Well...long story short, a charge from a city not my own sent my credit card company into a tizzy. After 3 phone calls, 1 to my credit card company, 1 to Portland Cole Haan and finally 1 back to Jeannie I thought we had it worked out. No dice. After call #4 I decided that the universe just didn't want me to have that luscious orange pebbled leather bag and bought this one instead. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with!

New favorite bistro
A friend turned me on to a very cozy new restaurant near the Castro called L'Ardoise. It's a French bistro named after the iconic chalkboard all French restaurateurs use for their daily specials. The space is small, but comfy. It's painted in a luxe red color. There are windows on the front that bring in the setting sun. The hostess/waitress/bartender is French as is the chef Thierry Clement.
I had the fricassee of mushroom risotto which was absolutely delicious. It didn't have that gluey consistency you'd expect from risotto, the sauce was more liquid and the rice had a consistency more like wild rice. It was so savory I was tempted to drink the left over sauce from my bowl. Don't worry, I didn't! Dessert was the spicy pear tartin. A bit heavy for my taste. I expected to taste more pear and less "candy". I think next time I'd order the strawberry under brioche. Still I think you should give the place a try!

Hot in the city
It was another scorcher today in San Francisco. The best way to beat the heat? Hit a movie and take advantage of the dark, air conditioned theater, the perfect place to cool off. I'd recommend the Sundance Kabuki in Japantown. They are owned by Robert Redford, and offer a wealth of amenities we're not used to at the movies. There's a cocktail lounge on the top floor, assigned seating, no advertisements before the films, reduced price parking and even free wi-fi if you and your beloved Mac just can't be parted. They also have a restaurant next door if you want to catch dinner before or after the film. Their concession stand serves freshly popped popcorn, Peet's coffee, and milk duds that are actually chewable. It's put the fun back into going to the movies again.

Mah goodness it's hot!
The temperature is heading for an unseasonable 90 degrees today and I'm thinking up ways to beat the heat. I've got my homemade lemonade chilling in the fridge, my strapless top and shorts on standby (don't worry, I never blog naked), now all I need is some cute/cool footwear. I saw these flip flops online this morning at Payless. They'd be just perfect paired with a crisp, white cotton sundress. Looks like I'm going shopping. Happy Friday everyone!

Incognito
Another fab find from my friends at Cole Haan. These sunglasses are perfect for avoiding the paparazzi or just sitting outside with a cool drink. And they fit my face perfectly. Enhancing my best features, while still maintaining an air of mystery.Cole Haan has some great stuff in their Summer collection this year.

Tea for two
It was a gorgeous, sunny day here in California. The perfect time to head out for lunch al fresco at the Samovar Tea Lounge in Yerba Buena gardens. My friend and I scored a table out on the patio overlooking the fountains. I cooled off with the chilled tea of the day, black velvet. It has the slightest bit of sweetness. Just enough that you don't need to add any sugar, very refreshing. My sandwich was turkey with lettuce, tomatoes (yes, I ate them) and onion. The bread is thick and seedy, just the thing to fill you up until dinner time. It's a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by.

Love it!
I picked up this gorg BCBG top at a fabulous boutique named South Moon Under when I was in Philly on vacation. I've been waiting ever since for a reason to bring it out. The photo doesn't do it justice, but trust me the colors are so flattering! Now that it's Summertime I plan to put it into heavy rotation. It looks great with white capris, black pants or just jeans.

Hora feliz

Ah, Happy Hour. A great American tradition. Booze and snacks, what could be better? It's summer time and I've assigned myself a mission. I want to sample the local happy hours, one a week, and find some new places to hang out.
Last night was my first foray. I went to Maya for a Cabana and some South of the Border nibblies. Things to know, drinks are expensive ($9 - 12), but if you stick to the short happy hour menu, margaritas, mojitos and sangria is just $5. You will be fed. Each table receives complimentary botanas. That's a stacked tray with small flautas, tomales, chile rellenos and black bean dip. It's delicious, and almost enough to make dinner. If you're still hungry order the guacamole. Servings are generous and you can fill up on their delicious, crispy chips.
The atmosphere is relaxed and the bar is casual. There is a small outdoor patio, but be warned it's windy after 5 p.m. The waiters are overworked and often forgetful. Just be patient and if your order isn't forthcoming, by all means speak up.

The sweet life
Summer has finally arrived. The forecast in the City for the next few days is hot, hotter and whew, crazy hot! That means two things, I'm digging out my shorts, and hitting my favorite gelato shop. Dolce Gelato on Nob Hill is a friendly, locally owned cafe where you can get your fix of the frozen treat. They also pull one of the best espressos in town. Score a table out front and a regular serving of key lime pie or orange marmalade gelato (with complimentary chocolate cookie, yum!), and you're good for an afternoon of staying cool.

A new guilty pleasure

Last weekend I caught a few episodes of a TLC series called, Say Yes to the Dress. It's all about what goes on in Kleinfeld, a large New York bridal salon. Tales are told from the points of view of the sales staff as well as the brides and their friends and family. Now I am a long time hater of reality television, but this stuff is like crack. I could not stop watching it. I have no idea why watching a woman pick out her wedding gown is so fascinating, but I literally could not change the channel or look away. You've got to check this show out!

OMFG
Fashion Guy bought me the first season of Gossip Girl on iTunes for my birthday this year. I am hooked! I just watched the pilot and this stuff is pretty hot for regular television. I don't know how they get half of it past the censors. I love the clothes, the locations, the characters. Can't wait to see what is in store for the rest of the season and find out Serena's big secret. Shhhh...don't tell.
"You know you love me". Gossip Girl, you know I do!

Okay, I can't decide...

If this bamboo bracelet from Banana Republic says fashion forward or fashion victim. I'm kind of loving it in a Tom Ford for Gucci sort of a way. But, do you think it's a bit too 70's? I don't want to leave my house in the equivalent of the owl necklace. Need some help people.

More dubious awards
Kevin Federline is to be feted on June 13th at Prive nightclub in Las Vegas as "Father of the Year". Um, seriously? This guy?! He doesn't have a job, relies on his hella-crazy ex wife for rent, food, child care and legal fees. His other two kids barely see him. I'm just not getting this. Sperminator of the millenia maybe, but Father of the Year, no.

CDFA Awards - Best & Worst
Best dressed
Hillary Duff - Did I really say that? Yes I did. She was wearing a gorgeous purple sparkly Michael Kors cocktail dress that fit like a glove. Nicely played.
Worst dressed
Maggie Gyllenhall - atrociously bad pantsuit with a see-through green tunic and clompy sandals. Sad hair, sad smile, totally housefrau.
Other thing of note: Posh is still working the futuristic Vogue look and pose, Mandy Moore brought out her "angry eyes", Ashley Olsen channeled her inner magician and Vera Wang designed herself some fugly shaggy carpet-like gown. Isn't fashion fun?

Mmmmmmm...

This article showed up in my e-mail the other day under the heading "cupcake porn". Being an insane cupcake addict, I immediately clicked over. The gallery of delectable little treats set my mouth to watering. Check it out for yourself, it might inspire you to hit a local cupcakery. Like Marie Antoinette said, "Let them eat (cup)cake!"
