Money Quote of the Day
One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important.
~ Bertrand Russell
Stick it
The movie Bring It On is a guilty pleasure for me and many of my fashionable friends. So when the director released a new film Stick It, I knew where we were going on girls movie night. Stick It is a gymnastics equivalent of Bring It On. It has your requisite girl anti-hero Haley (Eliza Dushku's Missy in BiO), a rabid skater girl who breaks into a housing development to practice her tricks and winds up in Juv-y. Her sentence, you guessed it, sent to VGA. The Vickerman Gymnastics Academy.
Turns out Haley is some kind of gymnastic wunderkind who lost it at "worlds" and dropped out of the scene. She has to overcome both her angry co-competitors, and being out of shape before she can prove that she's worth something. Jeff Bridges plays her tough love coach Vickerman, and Vanessa Lengies is delicious as Joanne her dimwitted and talentless rival.
The movie itself is pretty formulaic. We find out that Haley's mom was boffing her ex-coach, and that's what sent our girl over the edge. However, along the way there is some serious fun to be had. Like when Haley introduces her skater-boyz to her new gymnastics teammates. "You know boys?!", is the curious and excited response. Joanne hooks up with Poot, Haley's best friend, the movie's prime doofus. He delivers the classic line when she says, "Call me" - he fires back with "Stalk you!". Love it! :-)
It's 2 hours of no commitment popcorn movie fun. A great way to start the summer.
