I was in L.A. last week on business and tried out a new chic boutique property called O Hotel. It’s located just on the edge of downtown L.A. That’s my room you see above. Here’s what I thought of my stay.
Great rate – At just $149 per night it can’t be beat!
Location – It’s on the South edge of downtown L.A. in a cool yet quiet loft-filled hipster ‘hood. Think SoHo in New York or The Pearl District in Portland and you’ve got the vibe.
The food – The hotel houses the O Bar & Kitchen. Skip the cocktails and go straight for the food. They specialize in modern flavors with a serious spicy kick. You have to try the risotto balls with jalapeno remoulade and the bacon wrapped mushrooms. Still hungry? Their truffled mac & cheese, is the bomb!
The bath – I fell hard for the super mod Philippe Starck shower head in my bathroom. So much so that I Googled it when I got home and am thinking of installing one myself. Also, the Gilchrist & Soames bath products are definitely worth swiping!
Lighting – I thought the under the bed lighting was way cool. However, at night the power indicator on the t.v. and the clock radio light were bright enough to be seen from space. Not very conducive to a good night’s sleep.
Valet parking – The valet isn’t on duty until 9 a.m., which would only fly in L.A. If you’re there on business, and you’ve got a rental car it’s best to self park. There are several garages nearby. Believe me it’s less hassle.
The coffee – The “free” continental breakfast was fabulous and I indulged myself in the great assortment of delicious fresh pastries. The coffee though, was swill. Time to make the change to Peet’s. The stuff I had was transparent and tasted like Folgers.
The bathroom – It needs more shelves. Sure it’s uber cool looking, but functional it’s not. I’m a chick and need more space for my cosmetics.
Overall I’d advise you to give O Hotel a try. It’s a fun little offbeat find and once they works the quirks out it will be a great place to stay.
